There have also been mighty kings over Jerusalem, who have ruled over all the region beyond the River; and tax, tribute, and custom were paid to them.

Ezra 4.20

The lie managed to gain time to harm the work of restoration of Jerusalem, and through a complaint to King Artaxerxes, the work was temporarily halted. The men who wrote to the king wanted to humiliate the sons of Jacob and the Lord, but God made them understand that it wouldn't last. In Artaxerxes' reply, he affirmed the existence of kings of Israel who dominated many places

The account of someone who walked with God frightens the enemies of the Truth. They perceive something special in this person, who, even with limited resources, manages to bring peace to their hearts, solution to their problems, and the heavenly answer to their difficulties. The realization of this ability led Artaxerxes to order that the work of rebuilding the temple be halted until he had made his final decision.

A Christian's success annoys many people. Even the authorities are annoyed by a servant of God who is fearless, manages to honor his commitments, and helps those in need. For many leaders, the spread of the knowledge of God must be prevented because, in their view, Christians will grow in number and be a threat to often dirty and corrupt interests.

The Church of Christ is not in the world to measure forces with the constituted authorities of a country. The goal of God's work is the Kingdom of Heaven, not that of men. The Lord's servant rejoices in proclaiming peace for all, praying that the rulers will be clean people and that the members of the Body of Christ will know how to choose the best (1 Timothy 2.1-3). Ultimately, the Church's goal is not momentary power but eternal life alongside Christ. Glory be to Him!

We want to have powerful kings to free the people from corruption, evil works, prostitution, drugs, and other evils. We teach the people to respect their neighbor, living by what their hand does, without indulging in religious philosophies. It is in the Savior's interest to warn every human being that, one day, everyone will stand before the judgment seat of the universe, whose Judge is Jesus (2 Corinthians 5:10).

God is not to be trifled with. Darius soon became the monarch of the Persian Empire and, in his second year, authorized the rebuilding of the Lord's temple. This work took four years to complete, and then freedom returned to the sons of Jacob. There is a promise for those who love Jerusalem: Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: “May they prosper who love you” (Psalm 122.6). Read the book of Ezra, from chapters 4 to 6, and see that the Lord helps His people to organize themselves and serve Him.

No matter what trial you are facing or will face. The Most High loves those who honor and serve Him. Therefore, always cooperate with God's work so that the lost may find salvation and live free from the onslaught of the enemy. The Lord is our Strength and our very present Help in time of trouble (Psalm 46.1).

Today's Prayer

Beloved God! How often do we despair and cry out for help and mercy, forgetting that we have a covenant with You! Because of it, darkness will not be able to paralyze Your work. You are our Father!

In your Church, powerful kings have been constituted by Your Son for You. In view of this, the devil and his demons will never destroy Your work. We pray now for the eternal happiness of all peoples, that by hearing the Gospel they may be saved!

Use us beyond our capacity; after all, we are Your people serving You today. Even if the forces of hell rise up against us, they will fall to the ground. We are chosen by You and have been seated in Jesus to reign. Be glorified!
