That the Lord may fulfill His word which He spoke concerning me, saying, ‘If your sons take heed to their way, to walk before Me in truth with all their heart and with all their soul,’ He said, ‘you shall not lack a man on the throne of Israel’

1 Kings 2.4

David's interest, as the nation's second king, was in the task he had begun in Israel. The first ruler left something to be desired in the face of opposition from the Philistines who oppressed the sons of Jacob during his reign (1 Chronicles 10:13). It was different with Jesse's son. After two conflicts, those adversaries never attacked Israel again. David wanted the Israelites to be known as God's people and the work to be complete

David had made a covenant with the Lord, so he went to Solomon and exhorted him on how to act towards the nation and his successors. You see, in order to receive God's blessings, there are conditions, and what we do will count forever. The Covenant of the Most High with David was what mattered to him. We don't yet know who will succeed us in leading the work, but we have to teach everyone that serving the Most High is a duty that weighs heavily on those who are called.

The Almighty is a God of Covenants, and in the Bible, there are the two greatest covenants made with His children - the Old Covenant, called the Law of Moses, and the New Covenant, the perfect law of liberty, the Gospel (James 1:25; 2:12). Today, the law in force is that of freedom, which will be confirmed every time someone preaches it. The promises will be confirmed, because they have Jesus’ approval (2 Corinthians 1:19,20). Those who preach the Word, if they believe in what they do, will see the Lord set the lost free.

There were certain requirements for the Most High to confirm the Covenant made with David to his descendant. It didn't matter who he was; he had to keep his way before the face of God, paying attention to the Scriptures. Today, this is what Heaven requires to confirm our lives as servants of the King of kings. But if we turn our backs on the Word of the Lord, we will never be used or protected by Him. Let's be on our guard!

To walk before the face of God is to obey His Word faithfully. There is no place in the Father's heart for those who indulge in their own interests. When they reach the end of their journey, they will realize that their wickedness has not allowed the Lord's dreams to come true through them. True servants of God, on the other hand, are used in the divine harvest. The biblical promises, including the one about David, are meant for them and their descendants.

It is important to walk before the Lord, knowing that His Word will be fulfilled. God's people must behave like those who served the Most High in the past. King David's descendants had to walk before the Almighty with all their heart and soul, but some went astray, including Solomon (1 Kings 11:4-6). The only reason he wasn't removed from office was because of the Lord's promise to his father (1 Kings 11:9-13). Our example is Jesus!

The church weeps for those who don't stand firm in Christ and go astray into the world, causing scandal to God's work and losing themselves eternally. Why do they act like this, since they know that the Lord will ask for an account of their actions at the end of the journey?

Today's Prayer

Lord of the Covenants! It is a shame to see people going astray into the world of men, despising Your Kingdom. How can this happen, since we have Your good words that will never pass away? Why live as if we were of the devil, when we are already Yours?

We cry out for those who have been called and have despised Your offer, failing to confess their mistakes to You in order to receive Your forgiveness. Some have already gone to the afterlife, and others don't seem to care what they will suffer forever!

With fear, we plead on behalf of those who are seized by the poison of sin. May Your love and mercy surround them, so that they may see how good and kind You are. We thank You for guarding Your servants!
